Introducing – The Bus Exchange “Information Gateway

Check out this unique One-Stop industry shopping center - busexchange.com. Everything from obtaining expert advice on almost any facet of a bus fleet operation, to comparing specs & features for any bus or coach model sold in North America, to buying or selling a used bus vehicle, or sourcing out a needed component, product or service.
In today’s world, it’s all about instant access and the convenience of a mere few clicks to take you where you want to go. Accessible by computer and through most mobile devices, a few of its newly introduced features include:

An Industry Library
Launched just before the turn of the year, the Library already has more than 120 editorial articles that contain valuable tips on the various aspects of operating a bus fleet. We have invited specialists and various industry contributors to add their expertise and knowledge to this Library; the goal being to eventually build an industry “Body of Knowledge” containing many hundreds of articles, that can be freely accessed by and available to everyone in the industry.
Industry surveys revealed that approximately 90% of North America’s bus fleets are small fleets averaging less than 30 buses. There are also several hundred fleets, both private and public, that operate fleets in excess of 500 vehicles. Large fleets employ specialists – full-time safety directors, driver & mechanic trainers, to financial officers and operations managers, to sales directors and professional administrators.
However, it has been long recognized that small fleets cannot afford this high-priced expertise; thus it falls to the owner or general manager to take care of many of these duties, from driving the bus, to training a new driver, maintenance and repair, to processing pay checks at the end of the week. As such there is a great need for a readily available source of information & expertise that is freely accessible to everyone in the industry. This is the Mission of this Library.

A New Bus Model Site
A new and innovative time-saving service! This New Bus Model site provides detailed information on many of the industry’s most popular bus and coach models.  At this early stage we have some 40 models already posted, with more to come over the coming months.
Rather than a buyer having to ponderously take the time to identify and search out various manufacturers and individual model information from a number of sites, a few clicks of a mouse can instantly present every manufacturer and every model of every type of bus vehicle that is available to the North American marketplace. In mere seconds one can obtain detailed information, compare models and specs; and in quick fashion narrow their search to a short list of candidate models.
Each highlighted bus model contains detailed information that may include photos, specifications, floor plans, options, descriptions and features, all of which can be referenced, saved or downloaded at any time. Many of the model sites contain the original manufacturer’s detailed model/product brochures.
Why not test drive this new site and experience for yourself how easily information can be accessed, and how conveniently model comparisons can be carried out.

New & Used Buses for Sale
We now have just a few models up & running, and we are scheduled to get fully underway about March. It should prove to be a real time saver for both sellers and buyers! Although there are literally hundreds of for sale sites offering various bus models, in many cases these sites are merely online brokerages that are selling bus units that they don’t own. This can often result in post-sale problems for buyers, additional costs and liability for sellers, and in some cases unsafe vehicles being put into passenger service.
Our Mission here is to directly connect industry buyers and sellers. Rather than a brokerage, the Bus Exchange is a listing service where sellers can post their vehicles for sale and buyers can contact the seller directly. Our policy is to carefully register and screen all sellers to ensure that they are a bona fide bus dealer or fleet operation with the necessary service facilities and the capability to inspect, support, and satisfactorily maintain their vehicles. Our policy does not allow third party brokers or curbside sellers. We believe that this new service will have a positive effect on the industry – in terms of safety, by hopefully reducing the incidence of less than roadworthy vehicles being sold into service as passenger-carrying vehicles.

The Familiar Bus Exchange Services will continue!
Most readers are familiar with our Bus Exchange publications – the annual Bus Guide and Source Directory. The Bus Guide has long been considered as the industry’s most popular OEM publication. The annual Source Directory, a very strong after-market publication, contains contact information for many hundreds of companies offering the many thousands of parts, components, products and services needed each year by the 12,000 bus fleets that we reach in print and online. As in previous years, the 2013 Bus Guide and 2013 Source Directory are scheduled for distribution by mail and digitally on our website about the end of May.
In today’s information-based world, the ability to access needed information at any time, from anywhere is key to a successful and profitable operation. The Bus Exchange has served North America’s bus industry for nearly two decades, with the singular Mission of providing fleet operators – both large and small, with the most pertinent and timely information possible. Our newly minted “Information Gateway” services represents a large forward step in delivering the kind of information that is of most value to fleet executives, owners and managers. We invite you to check out our new information delivery systems online at: www.busexchange.com

UMA’s EXPO 2013 - The TRAVEL EXCHANGE
Two Shows - One Price, a World of Opportunity!

This is the premier year of the long-anticipated joint UMA (United Motorcoach Association) and NTA (National Tour Association) combined convention and show, known as the Travel Exchange. The Travel Exchange combines the best of UMA's Motorcoach EXPO and NTA's Convention in one location - with new and exciting benefits for members of both organizations. EXPO is the event to preview new product launches, tools, and technology the industry has to offer, learn the latest trends and updates on cutting edge industry topics and expand your professional network.
The Travel Exchange promises to be a travel industry event like no other!  Traditionally group travel has been the cornerstone of motorcoach business – more than 90% of North America’s coach operators, along with a significant portion of the nation’s small bus operators, depend on group travel. Travel groups regularly employ motorcoaches on multi-day tours, while shuttle buses are often required in short-haul services such as transferring groups between hotels, attractions, airport/rail terminals, and events.

Combining these two events is a natural fit. There is a need for greater dialogue between those who package group travel and those that are in the business of transporting groups. And this is essentially the purpose of the Travel Exchange.

Travel Exchange brings together the entire group travel industry:

  • Motorcoach operators
  • Tour operators, itinerary designers and tour product developers
  • Motorcoach equipment, components and services suppliers
  • Destinations, hotels, restaurants and attractions from across North America

For Motorcoach Operators this event should provide:

  • Broader access to new potential partners and resources, like tour operators, receptives, destinations, hotels, restaurants, and attractions
  • opportunities for one-on-one business appointments to help increase your marketing reach and grow your business
  • a more comprehensive understanding of the entire tour and travel industry
  • networking and partnering opportunities with the complete spectrum of group travel leaders who all share a common goal—more group travel!

For Group Travel Wholesalers & Retailers this event should:

  • Access to a trade show floor full of potential partners and industry resources
  • Opportunities to grow your circle of industry contacts—and your business
  • A more comprehensive understanding of motorcoach operators’ businesses
  • Networking and partnering opportunities with the complete spectrum of group travel leaders who all share a common goal—more group travel!

ABA’s MARKETPLACE – Charlotte NC

Now taking place in Charlotte, North Carolina, the annual ABA Marketplace brings together more than 100,000 face-to-face business meetings with people from all across North America to potentially book hundreds of millions of customers to destinations and hotels in the United States and Canada. They will also take advantage of professionally run educational programs and network with fellow business leaders. More than three thousand delegates will be attending this, the ABA’s 35th Edition of Marketplace.
The economic consulting firm of John Dunham and Associates of New York reported that Marketplace 2012, held in Grapevine TX generated more than $78 million in total business at the event as well as significant future economic activity.  John Dunham and Associates is at Charlotte again this year conducting this year’s survey.
The motorcoach, travel and tourism industry is playing a growing and leading role, helping the U.S. economy on its road to recovery. The U.S. Travel Association says the total economic impact of the travel and tourism industry is $1.9 trillion, supporting 14.4 million American jobs. Specifically in the motorcoach industry, its suppliers and manufacturers employ nearly 1.1 million people and generated nearly $113 billion in economic activity. In 2011, the travel and tourism sector of the economy expanded at a rate of 3.5%, while overall growth was 1.7%.
Also at Marketplace, DePaul University of Chicago will release its annual report showing the six consecutive year of growth in departures for the curbside segment of the motorcoach industry. The Director of DePaul’s Chaddick Institute Professor Joseph P. Schwieterman, along with ABA President and CEO Peter Pantuso and ABA Chairman Tom JeBran is scheduled to present the report on Sunday, January 6.
Motorcoach travel ranks as the second most utilized form of public intercity transportation, just behind airline travel. Now more people in North America are leaving their car keys at home and riding motorcoaches to get to work, take a business trip, travel with friends or go on a vacation. In 2010, the motorcoach industry provided nearly 700 million passenger trips, according to the ABA Foundation’s Census. During that same time period, the airlines provided 720 million passenger enplanements.
